HISTORY:

Developed in the early part of the 20th century, Lido Isle was once a sand bar known as “Pacific Electric Island” becoming part of the “Red Line Car” project carrying passengers from Los Angeles to Balboa. In 1923, the sand bar (Pacific Electric Island) was sold off for development of commercial wharfs and shipyards and and when dredging was complete, placed the island 11 feet above high tide. After a failed harbor bond issue, the project halted and the island was purchased by a group of investors for $125,000. A European architect was then hired to plan a resort community fashioned after “Lido di Venezia” across from Venice, Italy.

HOME STYLES:

This island offers some of the most attractive homes for sale in Newport Beach, California. There are approximately 865 homes on Lido Isle. Approximately 250 are bayfront properties — some of the best in Newport beach– and 615 on the interior of the island. The island is home to styles ranging from contemporary to traditional. Although there is no required architectural motive, the original theme of the island was intended to be Mediterranean with meandering stradas through the community featuring tile or slate roofs to promote the overall flavor. Lido Isle was designed to resemble the small, coastal Italian town after which it is named.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS:

Students are part of the Newport Mesa Unified School District including Newport Elementary (one of only 2 schools in the nation that is located on a beach), Ensign Intermediate and Newport Harbor High School.
